In celebration of Women’s Day in South Africa – the first week of August – GLN Southern Africa hosted a free 90-minute session with some remarkable women leaders. In addition to a keynote from the GLSnext series, Nona Jones(Head of Global Faith-Based Partnerships at Facebook) around the topic of Social Leadership, we also welcomed Liz Wachuka (Tanzania), Zillah Chilowa (Zimbabwe), Pearl Kupe and Madz Deyzel (South Africa) to the discussion. In this session, our panel touched on a broad range of topics, as it pertains to women and leadership in the season we found ourselves in.

As the Head of Global Faith-Based Partnerships at Facebook, Nona Jones leads the company’s work with faith-based organizations around the world. Jones was appointed to an executive role with a Fortune 100 company at only 23 years old. Since then she has led award-winning initiatives in public affairs, brokered multi-million-dollar business deals, addressed the United Nations and championed juvenile justice and education policy reform in the halls of Congress — all under the age of 35. Jones is a rare combination of preacher, author, business executive, entrepreneur, media personality and worship leader. Dr. Pearl Kupe is an attorney, Social dialogue & Transformational leadership expert, Executive Coach and International consultant to various governments, international organizations and world leaders. She is a former Corporate Executive for Transnet, the largest transport & logistics company in Africa. She is also a former UN Social Dialogue Specialist with the ILO (International Labour Organization) who worked to establish peace and set up dispute resolution institutions in the SADC region. Her current responsibilities include, amongst others: Senior Fellow at GILPP, the Geneva Institute of Leadership and Public Policy & Visiting Professor to the Caribbean Maritime University in Jamaica. Additionally, she is currently the International President of Global Forum for Women Entrepreneurs, a global network that networks women entrepreneurs from all over the world and sits on many international Boards, including the Acts Higher Education International Council (India) and the African Women Leaders Forum Honorary Executive Committee with Rev. Jesse Jackson as Chair of the committee. She is the International President of Global Forum for Women Entrepreneurs, a global network that networks women entrepreneurs for all over the world and provides business, networking and mentoring opportunities for women around the world. The ministry has various projects in various nations helping the vulnerable and disadvantaged. Dr. Kupe is a firm believer in community development, transformation and social action. She is a Kingdom activist who uses her professional training to further the Kingdom agenda and mandate.
Ms. Liz H. Wachuka
Liz H. Wachuka is a Business Management Consultant who uses her skills and expertise to maximise growth and improve business performance for her clients. As a mother, her desire to equip her children with the necessary lifeskills was a catalyst for writing a book called ‘The Routeen: A Winning Routine For Teens & Young Adults’. Though targeting teens and young adults, this book offers a holistic approach towards transforming any individual’s life, regardless of age, race, gender or religion. Liz is a certified Lead Auditor for ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management Systems) as well as a certified Kaizen Trainer.

Madz Deyzel was the founder of Grace Counselling – a lay counselling ministry at Grace Family Church in Durban, South Africa. Here she developed the Wholeness Counselling Framework and popular the Wholeness Course. In 2019, she launched EDIFY a ministry that seeks to equip and empower others with resources for spiritual and emotional well-being and to mentor churches on how to start and maintain a thriving lay counselling ministry. She developed the popular Wholeness Course and Wholeness Model and more recently ‘Coffee Cup Convo’s – Skills for Effective Discipleship Conversations & Your Mind Matters (Mental Health Foundations)’. She holds a B.A. Hons. Degree in Theology and Counselling through the London School of Theology and the Waverley Counselling Center. She also trained under Dr Siang-Yang Tan & Dr Eric Scalize on ‘Developing and Maintaining a Thriving Lay Counselling Ministry’ at the 2016 AACC National Conference in Dallas Texas. Madz is married to Dennis and they have two sons, Joshua and Levi.
Zillah Chilowa is passionate about inspiring leaders – not only of today, but those of tomorrow as well. In addition to serving as creative director at Tangerine Company – an events design and planning company in Harare, Zimbabwe – she also serves as key member in the GLS Zimbabwe team. Apart from serving on boards of a number of social enterprises, she also ploughs much of her energy into mentoring young people and developing young entrepreneurs. Zillah is married to Harold, and is the mother of their three boys and two girls.
